Firewalls are network devices which divide large networks into smaller segments, each different from the other in terms of security level and needs. Traffic traversing the firewall, from one segment to another, is inspected to ensure that it is compliant with the security policy. Traffic which does not comply is 'dropped', thus eliminating security risks from unauthorized traffic.
Current firewalls do not only inspect the network traffic, but also inspects the content of the traffic - resulting in a situation where traffic that is allowed by the policy, but still contains harmful content is also dropped.
